Chapter 2—Aiden

My mother looked incredibly worried as I kissed her on the cheek in farewell.

“Go, Mom, it will all be fine,” I reassured her. “I've got this.”

She bit her lip worriedly, before stroking the side of my face with the palm of her hand, her gaze searching my eyes as if looking for the lie I could be hiding.

“I know, darling, I know, but I still worry.”

“Come now, Belinda, I'm sure Aiden has it all well in hand,” my father chipped in, and my mother immediately reached up to straighten his bowtie.

My father was a dragon shifter, and had been alive for generations. He'd been alive so long, he couldn't really remember when and where exactly he was born.

He'd lived through and taken part in both of the World Wars, and come out the other side with barely a scratch. He was well over two hundred years old, but was only just starting to get a few gray hairs at his temple.

My mother, however, was a slightly different story. At twenty-two, she'd been a British nurse on the front lines during World War Two, and had met my father when he'd come through her infirmary with a gunshot wound to the thigh. Despite his healing abilities, he’d suffered. She'd stayed at his bedside from the moment he'd arrived, to the moment he'd left. According to them both, it was love at first sight, a love so strong and powerful, they were both helpless to resist it.

Inevitably, however, the time came when my father was healed and sent back out onto the front lines again, and they were forced to separate. As he was wheeled out of the infirmary in a wheelchair, he vowed to come and find her again once the war was over.

True to his word, a few months later, when the war was over, my mother was relocated to a hospital in London. He took a few months more to find her, and she'd almost given up the hope of ever seeing my father again, when she turned around after making a bed, to find him in the doorway of the ward with a bunch of roses in his hands.

Shortly after they reunited, my father proposed, and the rest, as they say, is history.

One of the many, many interesting things about dragon shifter lore, is that, after a dragon marks their mate, the mate becomes immortal, too. My parents would be together forever. That exact thought had made me believe, wholeheartedly, that true love existed from the time I was old enough to understand what love was. And while I hadn't found anyone of my own quite yet (one had come close), I couldn't help but think she was out there, just for me, somewhere.

“But Cadmus...” my mother implored him once his tie was straightened enough to her satisfaction.

“Kai and Brantley will behave themselves, I'm sure,” my father replied. “We should probably get going, or we'll be late.”

Mom looked up at the house, then the car, and then up at the house again.
